Andreas Østhagen is a Research Director for the Group of Arctic and Ocean Politics at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, as well as Senior Fellow at The Arctic Institute. He is further an affiliated fellow at the High North Center at Nord University Business School and teaches “Arctic Security and Geopolitics” at Oslo New University College.

Erdem Lamazhapov

PhD Research Fellow, Fridtjof Nansen Institute. His main research interests are in the fields of environmental, climate, and energy security in Northeast Asia and the Arctic, with a special focus on Russia and China. Other research interests include water resource management and security politics on the Korean Peninsula.

Gabriella Gricius

Gabriella Gricius, PhD, is a Senior Fellow at the Arctic Institute, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Konstanz, and a Fellow and the Media Coordinator with the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN).

She received her Ph.D. from Colorado State University’s Political Science Department where her dissertation explored the prevalence of low-tension discourse in Greenland, Svalbard, the Northern Sea Route, and the Northwest Passage. Her research interests broadly cover international relations, Arctic security, the potential for desecuritization during great power competition, and the role of experts in security decision-making processes.

Iver Neumann

Iver Neumann is Director of the Fridtjof Nansen Institute. From 2012-2017 he was the Montague Burton Professor of International Rleations at the London School of Economics and Science. He has also served as Research Director and Director at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and adjunct professor in International Relations at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

Justin Barnes

Justin Barnes is a Predoctoral Research Fellow at the Belfer Center's Arctic Initiative and a PhD candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. Barnes is also a Research Fellow at the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN) and Canada Fellow at Polar Research and Policy Initiative (PRPI). Barnes is a Managing Editor at the Arctic Yearbook (arcticyearbook.com), an annual interdisciplinary peer-reviewed volume focused on Arctic politics, governance, and security.

Barnes' research has been related to the intersections between climate change adaptation, community resilience, and security in the Arctic. While completing his Master’s degree in 2019, Barnes pursued an internship at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in the Division for Sustainable Development Goals at UN Headquarters. Barnes' current PhD research is focused on the influence of non-state actors in circumpolar governance.

Pavel Devyatkin

Pavel Devyatkin is a Senior Associate and Leadership Group member at The Arctic Institute. His research areas include Russian Arctic policy, US-Russia and US-China relations, international cooperation, governance, security, and diplomacy. He provides consultations to companies and academic institutions on Arctic affairs.

Pavel’s writing has been published by the US Department of Defense, Russian International Affairs Council, Polar Journal, Strategic Analysis, The Nation, Responsible Statecraft, and others. His publications are listed on Google Scholar.

Samuel Pallaq Huyer

Sam Huyer is a Netsilik Inuk from Gjoa Haven, Nunavut. His experience in the arctic fundamentally came from living in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut until moving to Nova Scotia in the late 1990’s. Sam has worked and has academic experience working in the field of geology while attending Dalhousie University from 2009-2011. He has also attended the Royal Military College of Canada from 2011-2012, completing the ALOY (Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year) program, while later becoming a Combat Engineer in Gagetown, New Brunswick. His Arctic experience includes military exercises, Arctic Winter Warfare, and Arctic survival while he was a Combat Engineer with 4 Engineer Support Regiment in Gagetown, New Brunswick. His studies and future research focus includes Arctic security and sovereignty for Inuit and Canadian relationship building and adaptation to Arctic climate change.
